Braden West\u2019s arrival into the world was marked by worry and uncertainty. Before he was born, an ultrasound revealed that he had Pfeiffer Syndrome Type 2, a rare genetic disorder that causes premature fusion of the skull bones, affecting the shape of the head and face. Doctors warned Braden\u2019s parents that their son might not live past 18 months. For Cheri, Braden\u2019s mother, the news felt unbearable. \u201cI mean, he\u2019s kicking in my belly and I\u2019m praying for God to take him home,\u201d she told News Nation Now in 2020. \u201cIt looked like it was a bad situation.\u201d Her heart ached as she imagined the difficult road ahead, unsure of how she could protect him from the harsh reality of his condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Braden was born, his parents immediately connected with him but faced the stark reality that survival was not guaranteed. Cheri recalled, \u201cThere\u2019s a picture of him when he was born and it shows his skull very well, a distinct clover shape. At a month old they let us bring him home. He was not thriving; they knew he was not going to make it.\u201d Braden was brought home to meet loved ones and experience life outside the hospital, a brief and precious gift that allowed his family to create memories in the face of overwhelming uncertainty. Yet, despite the grim prognosis, Braden began showing signs of remarkable resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, Braden underwent more than 30 surgeries, including a tracheotomy at just three months old and a procedure with a mere 10% survival rate. There were moments when his life hung in the balance, when his parents had to make excruciating decisions, signing DNR papers and preparing for the worst. But time and again, Braden defied the odds. Nurses like Michele Eddings Linn stood by him, praying for strength and guidance. \u201cBecause no one could watch him continue to go through this,\u201d Linn recalled. Her support, alongside the unwavering love of his parents and family, provided Braden with the care and encouragement necessary to survive, thrive, and eventually surpass every expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against all odds, Braden not only survived childhood but flourished. He celebrated his high school graduation in a moment of triumph that left everyone in awe. Cheri reflected on the milestone: \u201cWhen I was watching him walk the line, every emotion of the first few months of his life came flooding back. All I could think about was, he isn\u2019t supposed to be doing this\u2026 and here we are.\u201d Braden even orchestrated a spectacular celebration, arriving by helicopter at a live concert of his favorite musician, Cam Thompson, making the day unforgettable for himself and those who had supported him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now 22, Braden\u2019s journey continues as he pursues his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He has joined the Moseleyville Fire Department as a volunteer, dedicating his courage and determination to helping others.
